Vagal Nerve Stimulation

What is Vagal Nerve Stimulation?

The vagus nerve impacts the lungs, heart, abdomen, and a person’s psychological well-being.  By stimulating the vagus or vagal nerve with neuromodulation treatment, specific conditions are treated by a stimulator pain pump or spinal pump implanted near the spine.  The direct delivery of pain medication using neuromodulation is more effective than oral medication, which requires circulation in the bloodstream.  After implanting the pump, you and Dr. Anderson manage the control dosage and type of medication.

What Happens During the Surgery?

During surgery, Dr. Anderson implants a stimulator device under a muscle close to the shoulder, so stimulation is delivered by a lead directly to the nerve.  The implantation of the device in surgery usually takes 1 to 3 hours.  You will stay in the hospital for 1 to 3 days after surgery so Dr. Anderson and our Neuro Spine Team can work with you to adjust the stimulation and coaching you on self-management of the device.

How Long Will It Take Me To Feel Relief?

Physical relief and psychological changes in a person may take a few months or over a year for some conditions.  Epileptic seizure severity is likely to be reduced over 2 to 3 months.
