Sacroiliac Fusion

What is Sacroiliac Fusion?

Fusion is a medical term for joining bones to hold them together in a particular position. For example, the sacroiliac (SI joint) is located in the lower section of your back and connects your lower spine to your hip bones. Fusion is commonly done to treat chronic back pain that has not responded well to other conservative measures using either screws or plates or a synthetic material called osteoconductive material.

What Happens During Surgery?

Sacroiliac fusion is a surgical procedure that removes the painful area and stabilizes the sacrum. A titanium plate is then attached to the vertebrae and pelvis, allowing for the fusion of these two bones. The purpose of this surgery is to relieve pain and protect the spine from further injury by providing stability. Sacroiliac fusion is highly effective in reducing pain and improving function in people with sacroiliac joint instability (syndrome).

How Long Will It Take to Recovery?

Our approach to any Surgical procedure is “patient first, always,” and we strive to ensure that our patient’s surgical experience meets their preoperative expectations. It would be best if you also considered that it could take up to six months for the full benefit of this surgery to be realized, so be patient and gradually increase your activities as tolerated throughout recovery time.

Here at Summit Brain and Spine, we must provide information regarding the Sacroiliac Fusion procedure and the compression garment for recovery, which we offer to our patients. Knowing what to expect after one arrives home is often helpful, so we provide tips and valuable information on driving, showering, and returning to work.
