Cervical Disc Replacement

Cervical disc replacement surgery has been performed for more than 30 years. It is considered one of the safest and most effective surgical treatments for chronic neck or back pain caused by a ruptured or herniated cervical disc.

The surgery, performed by Brian Anderson, MD, neurosurgeon and the Summit Brain, Spine & Orthopedics team, is a treatment option for people with chronic neck and back pain due to a degenerative, herniated, or a ruptured spinal disc.

Many different kinds of spine problems can lead to cervical disc replacement surgery, including:

-Arthritis
-Degenerative disc disease
-Herniated discs (herniated intervertebral discs)
-Spondylolisthesis

What happens during the surgery?

Dr. Anderson removes the damaged disc during surgery and replaces it with an artificial one inserted into your spine using screws and rods. At this point, the operation is complete, and you’ll be able to go home after being discharged from the hospital.

How long will it take me to recover?

You should be able to return home within a few hours after cervical disc replacement surgery. Still, it could take up to two weeks before you’re fully recovered enough for regular activities like driving or working out at the gym again.
