Discectomy

A spine surgeon performs a discectomy or microdiscectomy to remove a part of the complete disc from the spine vertebra in a patient.

What is a Discectomy

The surgery, performed by Brian Anderson, MD, and the Summit Brain & Spine team, is a treatment option for people with chronic neck and back pain due to a degenerative, herniated, or a ruptured spinal disc.

Many different kinds of spine problems can lead to the need for a discectomy, including:

-Arthritis
-Degenerative disc disease
-Herniated discs (herniated intervertebral discs)

What Happens During the Surgery?

Dr. Anderson removes the damaged disc during surgery and replaces it with a bone graft or an artificial disc. Next, the artificial disc is inserted into your spine using screws and rods. At this point, the operation is complete, and you’ll be able to go home after being discharged from the hospital.

How Long Will It Take Me To Recover?

You should be able to return home within a few hours after cervical disk replacement surgery. Still, it could take up to two weeks to recover enough for regular activities like driving or working out at the gym again.
